浅草・浅草寺-Asakusa・Sensoji Tenple - the largest and oldest temple in Tokyo

Sensoji Temple is said to have been built in 628, and then Tokugawa Ieyasu who was the founder of Edo Shognate  supported this temple in the early 17th century. It has been burnt down several times during the Edo period, but it has been reconstructed each time. This is maybe why this temple and the principal image of Kannon-sama (the Buddhist deity of mercy or the Goddess of Mercy) are deeply believed by the people of each class such as samurai, merchants, and commoners. Kannon-sama is very popular among Japanese people as the object of religious belief. By the way this deity has various forms to save as many people as possible such as thousand armed or eleven faced. And many Kannonn-sama are enshrined all over Japan.

A famous shopping arcade called Nakamise was already formed in 1685, and it is said that street performance was played in the precincts of this temple. It had already become just like an amusement park. But I think this was the result linked with religious belief to Kannon-sama.

This day was one of Golden Week (from April 29 to May 6, ten consecutive holidays), so many people came to this temple including foreign tourists as usual.
